After about a year of sporadic hoping and searching, they're finally playing "Macgyver" on the TV Land channel! That's channel 72 for people with cable in the 510 area code. w00t!

Em and I have TiVo'd "The Cosby Show", "The Wonder Years", "Cheers", "Frasier" and "Growing Pains" in the past, and we found that only a few of them truly withstand the test of time, with "The Wonder Years" shining through. Let's just hope that my chaste image of Macgyver isn't besmirched.

Em and I love watching "The Wonder Years" reruns on TiVo. I found a fansite online and I didn't realize what a tramp Winnie was. But then I saw all of Kevin's girls.

Damn, he's a ho. He got more play in those six seasons than I've had in my entire life. Even though there was Susan Fisher (Kelly Packard), Linda Sloan (Maia Brewton), Mimi Detweiller (Soleil Moon Frye aka Punky Brewster) and Jessica Thomas (Alicia Silverstone), in my book, the most fly one had to be Madeline Adams.

Man, I totally forgot that Karen married Ross! I love this show!

Woohoo, after five days, my submitted caption still ranks #1. But in all honesty, it wasn't that great, it's just that so many others weren't.

Of all the Super Bowl ads, I really liked the Don Cheadle "Crazy" one, just when I was getting sick of the "Impossible", "Five Seconds" and "Roman Numerals" ones, the campaign redeems itself in my eyes.

But I hated this Super Bowl. Not only did the Raiders get pummeled, but the stupid post-game show went 75 minutes longer than scheduled. That means all the people that videotaped or TiVo'd Alias missed this week's episode entirely. I thought I was being clever by programming my TiVo to record an extra hour after the scheduled time for the show, knowing full well that these things are always late. When I got home after having watched the Super Bowl, I watched this week's episode ... or at least, the first half. When the show stopped, I was already tense from the building suspense (hey that rhymed). In disbelief, I literally screamed aloud at 3am.

Damn you Raiders. Damn you John Madden. Damn you Super Bowl. Damn you ABC.

This year, Cal is 6-0 in the Pac-10 basketball, in second place behind #1 Arizona. They are 13-2 overall and are ranked #25 in the AP. Cal is 27-1 in home games since Haas Pavilion was completed 2 years ago, and this is their best start in over 30 years. They still have to face #1 Arizona twice and #21 Oregon again as well as the scary and dangerous ASU Sun Devils, but things are looking good for Cal. They beat USC tonight and should beat a disheartened UCLA team this weekend. I was fortunate enough to see the Oregon vs. Cal game in Haas Pavilion a few weeks ago. Then, Oregon was a scoring juggernaut and ranked #10 in the nation. It was an exciting game, but Cal lead the entire game and won 88-72.

I will never forget the excitement of what many claimed "the game of the tournament" on March 20, 1993. Freshman sensation PG Jason Kidd and the upstart California Golden Bears were to be pitted against All-American PG Bobby Hurley and the defending two-time champion Duke Blue Devils. A few days before, Cal had upset LSU 66-64 on a buzzer beater by Kidd who sunk an underhand floater in triple coverage. The obviously bitter LSU coach, Dale Brown, predicted that "Cal doesn't have a prayer against Duke", who had not lost an NCAA tournament game since 1990.

After huge runs by both teams, Duke led 77-76 with two minutes left. During a loose ball, Kidd flung the ball into the air and made "a prayer" as he was fouled and made the free throw, giving Cal the 79-77 lead which they never rescinded. Cal stunned Duke that day, 82-77, while Kidd had 11 points, 14 assists, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Although Cal lost in the next round, it had made its way into the national spotlight and Jason Kidd had made himself a household name.

At the end of the following year, he declared himself eligible for the NBA draft and was picked 2nd overall in the 1994 draft by the Dallas Mavericks. Over the past 8 years, Kidd has established himself as the premiere point guard of the NBA. His career stats in eight seasons are 14.2 pts, 6.4 rebounds, 9.4 assts and 2.1 steals.

There have been many times that I have been proud to be a Cal alumnus, but this one stands out as one of my first.

As promised the recipe for the beef stew in the previous entry. It's not really hard. If I was more hard core, I'd make my own beef stock. But honestly, I don't have 12 hours to make it, so canned beef stock works just fine. And remember, when using wine, if you wouldn't drink it straight up, don't cook with it. Merlot is usually sweeter than cabernet and less acidic. Zinfandel is too spicy for this recipe.
  • 6 12-oz cans of beef stock (low sodium, preferably)

  • 1 cup of water

  • 1/2 bottle of red wine (a merlot or cabernet with medium acidity is good)

  • 1-1/2 lbs of beef for stew, cubed (usually short plate or foreshank)

  • 4 medium potatoes, diced (Russett, Yukon Gold or any potato with high starch content is preferable)

  • 1 yellow onion, diced

  • 4 medium carrots, cut into coins

  • 2 celery stalks, diced

  • 1 cup red cabbage, shredded (radicchio is too bitter)

  • 1 can tomatoes, diced, peeled and drained

  • 1 bunch of fresh basil, bruised and diced

  • salt and fresh ground black pepper
Start by heating a stock pot (should be able to hold at least two quarts) filled with the water and 3 cans of beef stock. Add the potatoes and carrots first. Once the soup is boiling, add in the onion, celery, tomatoes and the rest of the stock. Make sure to drain the tomatoes, otherwise the soup will be too sweet.

While bringing this to a boil, you can brown the stew beef, which is optional. I find that browning the beef (do not cook it through or it will be tough) and using the fond (residue at the bottom, thanks Michi) in the stew makes it a lot richer. Add in the beef and maintain at a medium boil with the pot covered entirely. After 45-60 minutes, reduce the heat to maintain a low boil and have the lid half open to allow the stock to reduce. After another 45-60 minutes, the stew should be much thicker. This is due to both the water reduction and the starch in the potatoes breaking down. Add in a pinch of salt, a couple grinds of fresh black pepper and as much basil as is palatable. Finally, add the wine and stir.

When you first add in the wine, the taste will probably be too strong. The longer the stew is heated, the more the alcohol reduces and the milder the impact from the wine. Let it reduce for 30-60 minutes, depending on preference. Serve by itself or over rice. Makes about 8-10 servings. Eat your heart out, Alton Brown!

Have you guys been watching American Idol? Where the heck are all the guys with any scintilla of singing talent? Justin was a very good singer, but after him, the talent dropped of considerably to boy band status. I still think Kelly Clarkson is a total cutie and I think Fox will be hard pressed to have a winner like her again.

Nothing much to say today, except I've got an interview tomorrow, wish me luck! Here are couple cool links to kill time with.

I'm in the middle of making my world-renowned *snort* beef stew. Per the request of Sarah, I'll post the recipe and picture up later tonight.

Raven and I were on IM tonight talking about CSS and XML validation and watching Letterman, waiting for the performance by Vienna Teng. Eric, an old internet acquaintance, is close friends with her and hosted a performance by her that several RBJ people went to, but I unfortunately could not attend. I was told it was fantastic, and since I've listened to some of her pieces for several months, I do not doubt this for a second.

So when Vienna finally came on, Raven and I stopped our bantering and watched in digital silence. After it was over, I sat back and realized that there was Vienna, playing piano and singing in front of a live audience on national late night television ... and then here I was, in my big Stussy sweatshirt that makes me look like Grimace, chatting with someone I've never met about CSS. I couldn't help but feel somewhat unaccomplished.

Em and I spent a large part of her three-day wekend celebrating our first anniversary, although neither of us are really into those kind of things. I'm too tired right now to go into detail, but here's a quick list of what we did:
Watching Frida, Em and I were mesmerized by how her paintings were literally brought to life throughout the movie. It reminded me of the innovative and beautiful animation in Waking Life, which is definitely not for everyone. The scene where Salma Hayek and Ashley Judd tango was downright provocative and sexy as hell.

Pictures are coming later. Hope you all have a good week.

Em and I watched My Sassy Girl last night. I liked it, but Em didn't think it was so great. I think a lot of meaning was lost in the sometimes poor translation and subtitling. There was a lot of symbolism that I saw in the movie, which made it much deeper and cerebral. I suggest watching it. Tonight we watched Y tu mamá también, which we both thought was an excellent movie. I highly recommend it.

Where has the past year gone? It has been almost one year since Em and I started dating, and I honestly don't know what I would have done without her in my life, without her here, with me, in the same vicinity as me. There have been some rough times but she has always supported me and encouraged me. She has never let me down. Neither of us are big on anniversaries. I used to be, but not so much anymore. Since she has a 3-day weekend, we're going to head up to Napa and do some hiking up at Mt. Tamalpais and Stinson Beach as well.

I'm wide awake but bored right now. I'm in the mood for something a little ... recursive. You are getting veerrryyy sleeeepppyyy.

I chose to avoid the whole Shaq the racist/Yao Ming controversy because everyone already knows about it and has their own opinion of it. Mine? Shaq was joking, he makes crude jokes because he can usually get away with it. He will probably get away with this one, despite the rancor from the Asian community. Why doesn't anyone make a ruckus about the Miami Heat giving away fortune cookies on the night Yao Ming came to play there? Because it's easier to single one person out, it's easier to direct vitriol at something tangible, not at the Miami Heat organization as a whole.

I do agree that Shaq, being one of the most visible players in the NBA, should recognize that the impression he leaves is probably one of the deeper and longer-lasting, and he should be more careful with his words, jokes or not. But it doesn't really matter to me. When Shaq talks, he's hardly even coherent. Anything that he does or says outside of basketball is--to quote Soo--folly. I've got two words to prove my point. Steel and Kazaam. These are two of the more putrid pieces of cinematic dung made in the last decade.

Shaq is supposedly all about basketball, being that big huge funking force under the rim. It's time for Shaq to put his money where his mouth is. I really want to see Yao Ming put Shaq to shame tonight in Houston (6:30PM PST, ESPN).

Oh and in regards to Bill Walton and his article linked at the beginning of this entry, although his message seems genuine, the article is pretty weak and tepid. I think he is just covering your ass, because he's about a week late on this one. Nice try though.

So in a mild surprise, Steve Mariucci has been fired as the coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Even though he had one more year on his contract, he has been let go but is still owed the last year of his contract totaling $2.2 million. Even though I hated Mariucci at first for leaving the coaching job at Cal after just one year to take the 9ers position, I feel bad for the guy.

When he got the team, it was neck-deep in salary cap woes. The team had a bunch of veterans, like Steve Young, nearing free agency or retirement. Most people thought it would take 5 or 6 years for the 9ers to turn things around with low-cost, young players. Mariucci did it in two. He has a 60% winning percentage and won 12 games in a season 3 out of his 6 years, but never made it very far into the playoffs. What else can you expect, living up to the dynasty-type teams that Walsh and Seifert had in the 80s and early 90s? All things considered, Mariucci did a fantastic job with what he had, and he is a great coach.

What bothers me is that Walsh and Donohue just gave him up and still have to pay him the $2.2 million. That makes me think they already have a replacement in mind, and I'm thinking that's either Mike Holmgren or Dennis Green. Nevertheless, last year, the Raiders let Gruden go to the Bucs for the Bucs' first and second-round picks the next two years in addition to $8 million. And you're telling me that Mariucci isn't worth nearly as much as Gruden?

The 9ers have Garcia, Terrell Owens and an exciting new running back in Kevan Barlow. Their secondary is young but learning fast. Whoever is the new head coach had better get results fast and prove that this seemingly inept decision was worth it.

I'm been frequenting Craigslist recently and I remembered the best-of-craigslist, a compiled list of some of the funniest and most enjoyable craigslist posts.

Here is an ad that I found particularly amusing. It's a little long, but well worth the read.

Looking to exchange my girlfriend for a peace of mind
Don’t get me wrong here. I love my girlfriend, or possibly a better way of putting it is I am infatuated and whipped, but I am about to crack here and tough times call for tough measures. I am looking for somebody to take her off my hands for what I am hoping will be forever in exchange for serenity and peace of mind. Maybe you don’t think you have that to offer in exchange but trust me, you do!

This is open to both men and women because she is bisexual. I have yet to see her hook up with a female but she swears, or possibly threatens she is bisexual. This only seems to come up when we are having issues but all I am saying is she is versatile.

She is also very sexy and I would go as far as saying she is a chameleon and would look good with just about everybody, or at least that is the way she sees it when she thinks I’m not watching her.

Here are some things she excels at and can enrich your life with:

Analyzing what is wrong with you
Spending your money
Microsoft Word
Getting other people’s numbers
Sex deprivation
Getting emotional
DHTML
Depression delegation
Multiple purse management
Sharing herself with others
Blamestorming
Bipolar reasoning
Fit throwing
Adobe Photoshop
Emotional terrorism
Microwave operation
MP3 Encoding

As you can see you will be getting quite a package here and I couldn’t even mention everything while the law suit is still pending. I know there are a lot of lonely men and women out there in the Bay Area and I am hoping to join your ranks quickly but at least one of you will never have to be alone again! (possibly several of you from my experience)

Thanks and I can have her on your porch within the hour.

I bet there is at least one person out there who was seriously considering hiring her until they realized that she had no Java or SQL Server experience, and anyone who is anyone knows CSS these days. I especially love how Adobe Photoshop is sandwiched between the invaluable oroject management skills of fit throwing and emotional terrorism.

By the way, this must be how C++ programmers get dates. Although I think this person gave up at the end and just used comments to make sure her point was clear.

Em and I have succumbed to the recent scourge that is reality television, but we're enjoying it. We watched the premiere of "Joe Millionaire" and we couldn't help laughing at the people involved. I'm sorry, but most of the women were just so unattractive. And was it just us, or did Joe Millionaire look something like the Missing Link? He actually looked like Patrick Warburton, the guy who played Puddy on "Seinfeld" and also did some M&M commercials. Anyhow, I don't really care to see this show anymore, but I do want to see how it ends up when the woman he chooses finds out the $50 million lie.

Last night, we watched "The Bachelorette". Now, neither of us had ever watched "The Bachelor", but it was hard to avoid the aftermath, poor Trista had her heart broken on national television, and she was all over the place. I actually didn't really notice until I opened up my Maxim magazine and there she was. Wow. Then I happened to see some talk show with the bachelor and the girl he did pick. She was alright, but from what I saw and heard, nothing like Trista.

Raven said it best. "She is pretty much the perfect woman... a Miami Heat cheerleader that is smokin' hot with a killer body and she has a masters degree and works as a physical pediatric therapist. How much more could you ask for?" Not much, my friend.

So as we were watching, we couldn't help but laugh at the swerve of some of the men. As much as I hate saying it, I think Charlie is the best looking of all the men. The trouble is, he funking know it. And maybe it was just us, but did you notice that the host, Chris Harrison, kept touching her every opportunity he got? I wouldn't blame him, tho. The highlight of the show was mishearing what some of the men were saying.

Did he just say "I would be lying if I didn't say that I was a little bit horny."?

I think he said "... a little disappointed ..."

Funny thing is, the first thing would have worked, too.

Thanks to the people (some that I know, some that I don't) that gave me gifts off of my Amazon wish list! I'm still enjoying the ones I got last year, specifically the magazine subscriptions. Em doesn't understand why people would ever give gifts to someone they don't even know. I can't really explain it, but she accepts it.

Em is back from the East Coast, woohoo!

Before I picked her up from SFO, I went over to Stonestown mall in SF. I picked up the Tempur-Pedic Neck Pillow from Brookstone for her and then stopped by Illuminations and got a 12-pack of scented votive candles including Tangerine, Pear, Lavender Fields, Lily of the Valley, Napa Valley Harvest and my personal favorite, Honeydew.

Then we came home and made quiche. We were starving, so we made a quick crust from Pillsbury crescent roll batter. We filled it with quartered artichoke hearts, spinach and shredded sharp cheddar. Two eggs were whisked into a cup of half-and-half with two pinches of salt and some ground nutmeg. The pie was then baked for 35 minutes at 375F.

Em loved the whole thing and remarked that she was so thankful that I had girly qualities. Someone shoot me now.

I need to go out and do something manly, like kill a boar and dance around in loincloth. You know, with sticks.

So Ohio State has won the BCS Championship in a thrilling--and somewhat controversial--win over Miami. Sucks for McGahee though, what a terrible way to end the season with that nasty injury. Despite the problems, it was a great game and Ohio State deserves the title.

Which brings me to my next topic, one I've been holding off on writing about for several months. For the past 18 months, I've been a fan of KPop and one of my favorite songs is "Because I'm a Girl" by KISS. Literally thousands of people have downloaded the mp3 and music video from my website over the last 10 months. Back at the end of August 2002, Jini won the MTV Last Fan Standing contest and got to present the Viewer's Choice Award at the 2002 VMAs. I posted about how she looked odd and didn't present herself well on stage.

On November 1, I get an instant message asking to chat with me, the person claiming that it was Jini (aka Theresa) of KISS. Of course, I didn't believe it. I did a google search on "Jini Kiss Theresa" and low and behold, my website came up fourth in the results. Anyhow, I talked to "Jini", doubtful of the validity of this person's claimed identity. But as I talked, I realized that this person knew an awful lot about behind-the-scenes things in KPop and a lot about Ohio State and its football program. Either this person did a lot of research or this was in fact her. She even told me a little secret about her group, and I guess I'll have to wait a couple of months to find out if it's true or not.

It's been 2 months now and every now and then Jini and I talk, and I've come to believe that this is really her. She showed me her webpage and even gave me props on it. She's been nothing short of amiable, talkative and well-educated. She told me she knows she looked bad on the VMAs, but she just wanted to give her 2 cents. She was nothing but polite after I kinda trashed her. Like I'd ever have any chance with a girl as hot as she.

Anyhow, ever since we started talking, she's been telling me Ohio State (she attends college there when not KPopping) is going to win the title, and tonight I can say she was right. So congratulations to the Ohio State football team and thanks for the chats, Jini. Looking forward to talking to you next time!

Don't take advantage of a girl's willingness to do anything for love. (translated)

KPop has finally made its way into the UK Pop scene.

I don't know if anyone but Ernie will really care enough to download this, but BoA appears in the Westlife video for the song "Flying Without Wings". The video is of them in the recording studio, singing and fooling around. BoA's English is pretty good and she sings reasonably well. The song is nothing special, but it's pleasant enough. So if you're a KPop, BoA and/or a (heaven forbid) Westlife fan, download the music video now! (mpeg file, 33.1MB)
