On Saturday, Em and I went to Flugtag, a Red Bull sponsored event that means "Flight Day" in German. Remember when you were in college and they used to have an Engineering Week? One of the contests would be to make a human-powered car or flying machine. This is the same concept, but it's more for show and you get "fly" from the deck of a barge on the SF piers 30 feet above the water. While we were there, Em asked me "What does the winner get?" Sardonically, I said "Respect!". But in secret, I was thinking "Who cares?! This is so cool!"

Turns out the winner gets $7,500, 2nd place gets $3,000 and 3rd gets $1,500. I can only imagine the motley groups of unemployed web developers who participated in this event, all praying to win in order to cover a few more months of rent, In N' Out and Netflix. Heck, if I knew about this contest a little earlier, I would have been in it myself.

This was the first time the event has taken place in SF. It originated in Austria in 1991. Em and I had a great time, despite the huge crowds and 4 hours of standing. I hope it's better advertised next year, and look out for my entry in 2003!

I'm sure you've probably already heard that Blogger was severely hacked early Friday morning. Sorry my little cherubs, I was not able to bring you my pearls of wit and wisdom. Not only that, but my webhost accidentally erased my DNS info so most people could not hit my site at one time or another during the day. What's worse, I wasn't able to receive or send email. Talk about an inopportune time; I am nearing the deadline of a project and trying to find a new contract or job. I was crippled and blind. Figuratively speaking.

Well everything is back up now, so no harm was really done although it took nearly 12 hours for everything to be rectified. I burned the midnight oil trying to meet a deadline, but I just missed it, so that means some work this weekend ... again. Em's grandmother passed away last week and she went to LA for most of the week. She has been sick for quite awhile, so Em was more relieved than anything.

Em and I went to Sushi Zone in downtown Oakland last night. It was very good! Em was impressed that they actually had a full menu of appetizers, but is still disappointed because none of the places that we've gone to serve natto, which is fine by me. She had a hamachi and scallion roll along with a miso and spinach appetizer. I had a beef steak teriyaki bento box, which was absolutely fantastic. It included 6 pieces a california roll and 4 pieces of nigiri sushi, which Em and I shared. I highly recommend Sushi Zone. We'll definitely go back to try other dishes.

Don't get me wrong, but it was good to have Em away for a few days while I was working like a madman. But there's nothing like the hug you get from your baby when you see her at the airport. What better way to start the weekend? We went to watch Punch Drunk Love in Berkeley. It was an unexpectedly good movie. Very odd but very funny. Worth the price of admission, in my opinion.

Still bored? You can thank Andrew for finding some good old fashioned ASCII pr0n. It's hard to make out sometimes, but it helps to sit back from the screen, although I know most of you will have your nose to it. Doesn't it remind you of the days as a horny little 12-year-old boy, changing the TV to the scrambled pr0n channels and staring hard at the screen, hoping you'd catch just a glance of some boobies?

Um, yeah, me neither.

I love Chemistry, and I used to love Tom Lehrer songs. If you don't know him by name, he was the man who wrote songs for The Electic Company like "Silent E" (Who can turn a can into a cane? Who can turn a plan into a plane? It's not too hard to see it's Silent E) and "LY" (How do you act so they don't know you're a spy? Normally. Normally. Normal. LY.)

Go see this nifty little flash where Tom Lehrer sings the Periodic Table. Kinda reminds me of that old Animaniacs song where Yakko sings the Nations of the World or Wakko sings the American Capitals.

Or if that doesn't tickle your pickle, there's always the Flash Rubik's Cube.

Fun!

For quite a few months now, since Em works all day and I spend a great deal of time at home, I like to make dinner. I've enjoyed cooking since my sophomore year. I lived with a guy named Mark whose family owned a restaurant in Spokane, WA. He would cook a lot of the time. I started to learn to bake, but by my last year at Berkeley, cooking was the way to go for me. It was easy stuff at first. Lasagna, canneloni, biscuits and gravy, tuna casserole. My main seasonings were pretty much just salt, pepper and garlic. Now I love making more complex dishes. Nothing crazy, just interesting combinations.

Tonight I made boneless pork loins marinated in a mix of olive oil, red wine vinegar, mustard seed, rosemary and thyme. It was accompanied with Basmati wild rice cooked in chicken broth and water as well as grilled baby zucchini dressed with olive, salt and cracked black pepper. Not including marinating time, the entire meal took about 30 minutes to make (eat your heart out, Rachel Ray!). We ate dinner and watched Friends and an old episode of The Wonder Years.

Ever since I got the Tivo 16 months ago, I've been catching up on all sorts of shows, from Cheers to Frasier, Seinfeld to Drew Carey, The Pretender to The Cosby Show, Ally to Buffy and of course, The Wonder Years. I loved this show when it first aired. I moved to California in 1988 and it was one of the first shows that I watched regularly. I didn't have any friends back then after the move, but The Wonder Years somehow made me feel better. That all the angst I felt wasn't just in my mind. That deep down, I was just like any other teenage boy. It's been almost 10 years since the show last aired, and watching it now, I think I actually enjoy it more than ever.

After watching the episode tonight with Em, I--being an only child--told her that this show was the closest thing to knowing what it was like to have a sibling. Until now, I never realized how forever synonymous Daniel Stern's voice will be with The Wonder Years, and I never realized how corny many of the lines were. Corny or not, I can't go through a single episode without choking up at least once. I can't believe a show can do that; evoke emotions from me, many times about things I've never experienced.

But maybe that's the power of the show. It makes you wish you lived his life, fears, frustrations, victories and all. It makes you wish you had a scary but caring father like Jack, it makes you wish you had a jackass brother like Wayne. It makes you wish you had known and loved a Winnie all of your life. It makes you wish you could look back at your life with wonder.

Once upon a time there was a girl I knew, who lived across the street. Brown hair, brown eyes. When she smiled, I smiled. When she cried, I cried. Every single thing that ever happened to me that mattered, in some way had to do with her. That day Winnie and I promised each other that no matter what, that we'd always be together. It was a promise full of passion and truth and wisdom. It was the kind of promise that can only come from the hearts of the very young.

After using the Babelfish Translator for years, I started to realize that more often than not, the exact meaning I intended gets lost in translation. I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen if a phrase was translated through all of the filters, from English to French to English to German, etc, etc. Of course no one will believe me, but I thought about doing it years ago. I just suck in terms of execution. Some folks at Case Western Reserve have brought us a nifty little webpage that takes your phrase and well, gets it Lost In Translation

The cool thing is that you can see the interim translations while they're being processed. That means you can see "all your base are belong to us" translated to "their whole lower surface are belong to us" to "Its superficial lower whole number is belongs to us".

Interesting link, kept me entertained for awhile. Care to take a guess what these songs were?

1) We augur you he happy NATO they and a new lucky person of the year.
2) The love of the boy is not sufficient to the times to the right.
3) It has the ignited, impressive effect would wish to be, all demoliert he.
4) I have scrambled ascending the raised mountain, that one that you fêz to the work of the fields, to be only with you with the relative only with you.
5) The love of the OH -, my heart broke, forms here of hour I seriously for you.

You should know by now that I absolutely love Legos. The bright colors, the satisfying sound of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic snapping together, the little Lego logo on every little nubbly of every little piece, the way Legos can be construed as an approximate digital representation of the analog world.

While I love the big Collector's Edition Star Wars sets and Lego Mecha, you can't beat the creativity of some out there. When I was a child playing with Legos, I was making ugly, misshapen houses and multi-colored walls to run Matchbox cars into. There are people out there making DNA, Rubik's Cube Solvers and the initial Star Wars trilogy.

What do you get when you mix M.C. Escher and Lego? I don't know, but it's so very very very cool.

Oh yeah, can't forget about Lego pr0n.

Are you in love? Just imagine that after a few months or years of a relationship, things about your husband/boyfriend start to bother you. The little things. Really bother you. Empty toilet paper rolls, turning the thermostat down too far, and the all-too-infamous dishes left in the sink.

Now, imagine that you really needed to vent these frustrations. Now, imagine that you decide to vent these frustrations by telling these stories on the internet. Now, imagine that you and nine other wives collaborate to make a website that becomes an all out conflagration against the lazy and inconsiderate men in their lives.

Now bear in mind, I'm not trying to belittle what they're doing, I just think it's funny. Maybe I'm being obtuse, but many of these problems are probably better served by being discussed openly in the relationship, not allowed to seep out through the internet. Nothing will ever be improved this way. Don't laugh just yet. Are you sure your girlfriend/wife isn't one of them?

Sorry fellas, the jig is up. Urologists in the UK have conclusive data dispelling the notion that shoe size and pen!s size are linked.

Because it wasn't feasible to measure the length of the erect pen!s, the researchers measured it when gently stretched. OK, when you call yourself a doctor and you're tugging at random guy's twig n' berries to "extrapolate erect pen!s length", you know you've made a serious vocational error somewhere along the line. There are doctors and scientists making Nobel Prize-worthy breakthroughs in stem cell research, cancer prevention and acrylamide reduction in processed foods. You're in a little room crouching and giving Nigel a quasi-handj0b.

One of the involved scientists proposes further research. "I have some ideas that I am currently putting together as a research proposal," the researcher added. "There must be some part of the body that is predictive of pen!le length."

Um, yeah, it's called the pen!s. Hello.

Sorry I changed some characters because you know, I can only imagine the Google searches I'll be found under otherwise.

Rabbit.
